Workshop #2: Tour of Greater Esquimalt Shipyards (Morning Workshop)

This morning workshop provides a tour through various installations at the Greater Esquimalt Shipyards, one of the largest ship building and repair facilities in Canada.

Department of National Defense (Canadian Navy at CFB Esquimalt)

Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt is Canada's largest naval base on the West Coast, home port to the Pacific fleet, and command centre for the Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC).

It occupies approximately 41 square kilometres (10,000 acres) at the southern tip of Vancouver Island on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, in and around the municipality of Esquimalt. CFB Esquimalt comprises facilities including HMCS Naden, Fleet Maintenance Facility, a Fire Fighting and Damage Control School, the Naval Officer Training Centre and extensive housing quarters.

The present dockyard and drydock dates to the Royal Navy's Esquimalt Royal Navy Dockyard (1842-1905) and was used initially to service Royal Navy square riggers; modernized, it now services the most recent Canadian warships.

  • Explore the naval facilities and operations.
  • Come aboard and under deck of frigate HMCS Regina.
  • Find out how the Canadian Navy attempts to link environmental sensitivity with their defense mandate.
Victoria Shipyards
Victoria Shipyards

Adjacent to and utilizing the Esquimalt Graving Dock, Victoria Shipyards can drydock and repair vessels up to 100,000 DWT. Part of the Washington Marine Group, Victoria Shipyards performs a wide range of repairs up to and including complete vessel conversions.

A visit to Victoria Shipyards will offer participants a look at the operations at a state-of-the-art ship building and repair facility as well as one of four submarines recently acquired by the Canadian Navy, HMCS Chicoutimi.

Victoria Shipyards Victoria Shipyards

HMCS Chicoutimi departed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 1, 2009, aboard heavy-lift ship MV Tern. After a 30-day voyage through the Panama Canal, MV Tern arrived at Esquimalt where Victoria Shipyards are tasked to perform refit work, before HMCS Chicoutimi will return to service in 2012.

Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD)

The Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) is the largest solid-bottom commercial drydock on the West Coast of the Americas. Located in an ice free ice harbour near Victoria on Vancouver Island, these world-class facilities include stabilizer pockets and high-speed heavy lift cranes up to 150 tonnes/165 tons.

EGD can accommodate vessels up to 100,000 DWT or about 90% of the world's ships.

The Esquimalt Graving Dock is a branch of Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) - a Canadian federal government department - and available to any company or individual on a first-come first-serve basis. All work is carried out by private sector ship repair firms.

The Dock is a popular location for repair and refit work for:

Esquimalt Graving Dock
  • West Coast cruise ships;
  • Bulk and general cargo vessels travelling to Alaska and the Pacific Rim; and,
  • Canadian vessels - especially the Department of National Defense and the British Columbia Ferry Corporation.

EGD employs an ISO 14001 environmental management system to ensure that work at the dock is done in an environmentally responsible manner. As such it constitutes one of only three multi-user ship repair facilities in the world with this special designation.

A visit to the Esquimalt Graving Dock will commence with a tour of the facility including:

  • Heavy-lift crane (weather permitting)
  • Pump house (Heritage Site)
  • Contaminated waste separation facilities
  • Subterranean (below ship) tunnel system
